White House/NVIDIA/OpenAI/Anthropic/Google/Microsoft/Amazon
On September 12, several industry leaders, including Google President Ruth Porat, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, met at the White House with several officials of President Joe Biden's administration.
On the powwow's front burner was the future of AI and data center-related energy infrastructure. According to a CNBC report, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo also attended the discussions.
Moreover, several utility company execs took part.
Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC)/Google/European Union (EU)
Google is in the crosshairs of the EU's leading data regulator. This time, the Irish DPC is investigating the search engine giant's compliance with privacy laws during the training processes of its AI models.
In related news, in a September 11 blog post, Google revealed that its AI-powered note-taking solution "NotebookLM" can now convert documents into a two-way podcast.
Moreover, the automated hosts take the conversation further than the initial material and can include lighthearted banter.
OpenAI
OpenAI took its industry game further by introducing its new "Strawberry" AI model series. The firm launched the o1 and o1-mini versions.
OpenAI's Strawberry models can solve complex problems. Strawberry's o1 version will be available on ChatGPT via API starting September 12.

Adobe
On September 11, software behemoth Adobe revealed the limited release of an AI video solution. The offering will be available before the end of the year.
Additionally, the "Adobe Firefly Video Model" will be a part of the "Firefly" solution suite.
IBM/ESPN
In a September 10 announcement, IBM and ESPN revealed additions to the "ESPN Fantasy" platform. The new integrations leverage tech and GenAI from IBM's watsonx.
Furthermore, the duo aims to improve the experiences of fantasy football users.
Meta/Facebook/Instagram
Social media giant Meta (allegedly) shifted its position on AI-labeled content. According to a September 12 The Verge report, Meta updated an April 5 post to reflect changes to the positioning of its AI labeling policies.
AI tags will feature in the top right corner of images instead of under usernames. Additionally, users can click on the menu to ascertain further information about the image.
According to an ABC News Australia report, Meta's global privacy director, Melinda Claybaugh (reportedly) admitted to scraping the data of adult users during a parliamentary inquiry.
According to transcripts, Claybaugh (allegedly) admitted that the public data of users below 18 was also (allegedly) scraped. Consequently, users within the European Union were not affected because of opt-out options and privacy regulations.

Pope Francis
During the Catholic Pontiff's visit to Singapore, Pope Francis cautioned about artificial intelligence's negative impact on society. The Pope iterated that new technologies (could) pose the risk of putting individuals in isolated, false realities.
Moreover, the Pontiff advised that AI should unite people and stressed the importance of human relationships.
Google/The State of Nevada
The Silver State boosted unemployment benefits via a partnership with Google. Nevada's Board of Examiners contracted Google to deploy GenAI to its unemployment claims appeals processes.
The Board approved the deal for its Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) in July.
National Institutes of Health (NIH)/Stevens Project/Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU)/University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC)
The Stevens Project, a GenAI-powered approach to mitigating the progression of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a degenerative eye disease, gave infant eye care a new lease of life.
Leading ROH experts Dr. Paul Chan at the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) and Dr. Peter Campbell at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) will collaborate to develop a model using image banks to create a model that will aid the timely discovery of the condition.
The NIH awarded $2.2 million to the project. ROH is treatable and reversible with early detection.
Following the Money
OpenAI
According to a September 11 Bloomberg report, OpenAI is (reportedly) seeking to raise $6.5 billion from investors. Additionally, OpenAI is in talks with banks to raise $5 billion through revolving credit.
The tech firm could have a $150 billion valuation (if the discussions succeed).
Acuvity
Sunnyvale, California-based AI security ecosystem Acuvity raised $9 million in a Seed Funding round led by Foundation Capital. Other investors are Jonathan Siddharth, Basil Alwan, and Sri Reddy.
Glean
AI-focused search startup Glea secured $260 million in a Series E Funding round. DST Global and Altimeter led the round. Other investors include SoftBank Vision Fund 2 and Sapphire Ventures.
