Under the AI Hood
Microsoft/Palantir
In an August 8 announcement, software behemoth and analytics-focused Palantir revealed another milestone in their partnership. This time, the duo provides AI-based services to America's defense industry, including analytics and enhanced data insights.
Palantir will deploy its ecosystem, including AIP, Apollo, Foundry, and Gotham, within the Microsoft Azure Government and in the Azure Government Secret (DoD Impact Level 6) and Top Secret clouds.
Video communications will soon get a turnaround with a new feature from tech giant Google. Google introduced a new solution to transcribe texts within its "Google Meet" ecosystem.
Additionally, "Take Notes for Me" is powered by Gemini, and the experimental add-on is available for "Gemini Enterprise," "Gemini Education Premium," "AI Meetings," and "Messaging" users.
Twitter (X)/The European Union/The Irish Data Protection Commission
The EU's push to protect its residents from being used for training data activities by tech companies continued. In an Irish Court on August 8, the Elon Musk-owned X social media platform allowed users to withdraw from training data tasks within its ecosystem.
Ireland's Data Protection Commission is leading the charge to protect users from tech firms' arbitrary use of their data.
Industry Dive
Intel
Despite its ongoing talent challenges and geopolitical tensions, Intel continued to shine, and this time, cars will (soon) have GPUs. In an August 8 announcement, the chipmaker revealed its (first) discrete graphics processing unit (dGPU), the Intel® Arc™ Graphics for Automotive.
The new car-focused chip will improve the deployment of AI solutions. Intel introduced the GPU at its AI Cockpit Innovation Experience event in China.
Zoom
Video conferencing firm Zoom took its AI game a notch further with the launch of Zoom Docs, its AI-focused processor. Zoom Docs is integrated with Zoom AI Companion and uses several models to improve collaborations during meetings via action lists, reports, and summaries.
Furthermore, Zoom Companion deploys several models, including those of Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, and its own.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) (United Kingdom)/Amazon/Anthropic
Antitrust concerns across the pond came to the fore after Amazon's recent $4 billion investment in Anthropic. The UK's CMA confirmed investigations into the deal, iterating that the 40-day deadline to determine the deal's impact on competition in the UK is ongoing.
Everything Else
Intel/The Paris Olympics
Interestingly, AI tools can spot future Olympic champions from a mile away. A new AI solution (by Intel) harvests various physical data points, including strength, endurance, and reaction times, and tests them within several scenarios.
The tech is currently in use at the Paris Olympics.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
As wildfires continue to cause concerns across the West, AI tools could help. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has indicated that its AI-powered Next Generation Fire System will be able to spot fires (quickly) using its geostationary satellites that take scans every few seconds.
Furthermore, in June, the NOAA tested the Next Generation Fire System at its fire weather testbed in Colorado.
University of Leeds (UK)
The risk of bowel cancer recurrence could (drastically) be reduced thanks to AI. Researchers at the University of Leeds determined the levels of CD3 immune cells in early-stage tumors using an AI model.
Consequently, the scientists developed a "CD3 score" following the analysis of 868 patients and the development of an algorithm.
Following the Money
