Under the AI Hood
Meta
Social media behemoth Meta introduced new AI-driven tools on June 6 at an event in Brazil. The solutions integrate with ads and messages businesses send to their customers and will use data from sister platforms Instagram and Facebook to determine customer receptiveness.
Microsoft/Federal Trade Commission
Software giant Microsoft's March deal with AI startup Inflection came under the scrutiny of the FTC. According to a June 6 CNN report, the regulator is probing Microsoft's $650 million payment and hiring of Inflection's human resources. The move comes amid a new push to regulate the industry.
Search engine giant Google unveiled new upgrades to NotebookLM, the AI-powered note-taking platform. NotebookLM (now) has Gemini 1.5 Pro and is available (globally) in over 200 countries.
Furthermore, the solution supports Google Slides and inline citations.
Industry Dive
The State of California/Silicon Valley
Seemingly, everyone in Silicon Valley is up in arms against a new AI bill that is gaining ground in the California State Capitol. California State Senator Scott Wiener sponsored (SB 1047), a bill that creates safety standards for the most significant large language models (LLMs) and requires software firms to add a "kill switch" to their solutions.
The Department of the Treasury
America's top money regulator opened the public comment window over using AI solutions in the financial services sector. In a June 6 press release, the Treasury's request for information covers AI uses, risks, and opportunities in the industry.
Additionally, the request covers the ethical usage of AI tools and their impact on consumers.
DuckDuckGo
Privacy-oriented search engine DuckDuckGo revealed AI Chat, a chatbot that offers integrations to several models. The integrations keep the search engine's security-oriented focus.
There is also no metadata, and the search engine deletes user data within a month. The free version also has limits.
Blackbox.ai
Premier coding LLM Blackbox.ai launched its AI coding assistant, giving developers options and improved flexibility. The solution also helps programmers with various tasks, including natural language code conversions, code completion suggestions, and more.
Everything Else
Epoch AI
AI chatbots are consuming so much human-generated data that there could be only a few left soon. At least, that's what a report from research firm Epoch AI suggests.
The June 6 report likened the current data use rate to a gold rush and predicted a scarcity of (publicly) available human-generated data between 2026 and 2032.
World Economic Forum (WEF)/Microsoft/LinkedIn
Similarly, the WEF has suggested that AI skills outmatch work experience. According to a June 6 post on the WEF website, a study by Microsoft and LinkedIn suggests that AI aptitude is superior to hands-on experience.
Furthermore, the report predicted the emergence of AI superusers in the labor market.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Interestingly, researchers at MIT unveiled an AI chatbot that mimics the consequences of current actions. The Future You project at MIT's Media Lab developed the bot that allows users to chat with 60-year-old versions of themselves.
Following the Money
Cohere
Across the border in Maple Country, the enterprise-focused AI firm Cohere successfully raised $450 million in funding rounds—several tech giants invested in Cohere, including Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, Cisco, and others.
Cisco/Nvidia
Similarly, on June 4, Cisco revealed its $1 billion AI startup fund, launched in partnership with Nvidia. The fund will (expectedly) invest in firms that build products suited for Cisco's ecosystem.
The firm also launched the Cisco Nexus HyperFabric AI cluster, combining its networking capacities with Nvidia's AI computing capabilities.
Alinia AI
We move across the pond to the United Kingdom, where safety-focused Alinia AI (successfully) raised $2.4 million in pre-seed funding. Precursor Ventures and Speedinvest led the round, which included several angel investors.
