Under the AI Hood
Search engine giant Google raised the bar with the launch of its AI campus in London, United Kingdom. The new facility will educate and mentor students, focusing on underserved segments.
The Somers Town, Camden campus will expose learners to real-world AI projects.
Similarly, new research from Google Cloud revealed substantial savings AI solutions bring. At the Google Cloud Public Sector Summit UK, the study revealed projected savings of up to £38 billion (approximately $48.137 billion) by 2030.
Amazon
To minimize its reliance on industry leaders, Amazon launched an AI model. The LLM dubbed Olympus can process images and videos.
Moreover, the model can produce video and image-based answers to user queries.
Microsoft
Software giant Microsoft took the extra step of reassuring users about its data training activities. According to a November 27 Reuters report, the firm denied using customer data from its Microsoft 365 suite for training.
In addition, social media posts indicated that Microsoft used its "connected experiences" for AI training.
Industry Dive
Department of Defense (DoD)
Washington D.C. and its environs are in for a pleasant change with an AI-powered defense upgrade from the DoD. In a November 25 post, the DoD revealed enhancements to the Enhanced Regional Situational Awareness System (ERSA).
The ERSA now has AI-powered lasers, cameras, and monitoring for improved security checks.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC)/Evolve Technology
Following the proof of unsupported claims about its products' AI capabilities, security scanning firm Evolve Technology settled with the FTC.
As part of the agreement, Evolve will no longer make unsupported claims about its security products (which are) available across industries and sectors.
The action follows a 2022 BBC report about Evolve's scanning tech issues and a 2023 coverage of a high school stabbing incident involving its tech.
Uber
Interestingly, Uber took a giant leap into the AI industry with its 'Scaled Solutions' business unit, which empowers independent contractors for AI labeling. The ride-hailing firm rents gig workers to AI firms for a fee.
Uber deploys AI for its internal systems, and the division consists of workers in India and the United States who handle such tasks internally.
The United Kingdom
We move across the pond to the UK, where a November 28 Guardian report indicates that most agencies are yet to register their AI deployments on the mandatory government register. According to the report, only nine AI projects are publicly available.
The government's security services have been quiet about their AI forays.
Everything Else
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Hurricane flood predictions are now easy, thanks to a new tool from MIT. Researchers at MIT developed an AI-powered tool that uses physics-based images to reinforce AI-generated images of future flood impact.
Furthermore, the team compared the images with purely AI-generated pictures of Hurricane Harvey, which struck Houston in 2017, and discovered highly accurate results.
NVIDIA
Humorously, AI-generated music is now on another level with Fugatto, a new tool by NVIDIA. According to the chip-making firm, Fugatto can generate entirely new pieces from text and audio.
Additionally, Fugatto is capable of changing human voice tones based on emotions.
Virgin Media O2
Thanks to Daisy, a scam-busting 'AI grandma' solution that could keep the bad guys talking for hours, scammers' efforts are now in jeopardy. Daisy launched on November 14 and has taken over a thousand calls with the bad actors.
UK telecoms firm Virgin Media O2 introduced the offering to raise awareness about the growing scam call problem.
