Innovation took center stage, with use cases serving as an industry pivot. Additionally, international cooperation is rising, with agencies taking a (keen) interest in all things AI.
Here are the headlines:
Thanks to AI, Google's emissions targets are (way) off;
Brazil's regulator cut off Meta's data training plans ;
Tesla unveiled its humanoid robot in China (from behind a glass casing);
The United Nations called for global AI cooperation;
Plus, AI cameras to catch drivers using mobile phones on the go are now a thing;
Also, human AI fears are real, with AI Steve (remember him?) losing his elections by a wide margin (read on to find out);
And much more!

Under the AI Hood
According to a July 2 Al Jazeera report, Google's emissions targets are falling below their estimations. A recently released report showed a 13% year-over-year (YoY) increase in emissions. Emissions have grown by 48% since 2019.
Additionally, the search engine giant attributed the increase to rising energy usage from its data centers because of AI deployments.
Tesla
Electric vehicle maker Tesla pushed beyond the limits of self-driving cars to robots. According to a July 5 South China Morning Post, Tesla revealed Optimus, the second generation humanoid robot, at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai from behind a glass.
Many humanoid robots unveiled at the show are still in their early (research) stages.
Meta/ANPD (Brazil)
Social media giant Meta's data training plans hit another roadblock. Brazil's ANPD, the country's data privacy protection agency, suspended Meta's privacy policy, allowing it to train its AI models with user data.
The ANPD cited the risks surrounding user rights as one of the reasons for the decision.
Similarly, in related news, WhatsApp is set to introduce a new feature that allows users to generate unique (personalized) AI avatars via text prompts and images. Furthermore, the tool is (currently) in beta.
Industry Dive
Apple
According to a July 4 Digitimes report, iPhone maker Apple is (secretly) developing advanced AI chips for cloud computing. Additionally, the chips will (expectedly) enter the markets next year.
International Monetary Fund (IMF)
Advanced economies are (seemingly) at the risk of job losses. That's what analysts at the IMF think. In a recently released research paper, AI's emergence puts 33% of jobs in top countries at risk. 24% and 18% of employment in emerging and low-income countries could be (also) up for grabs.
The United Nations (UN)
The first international framework for AI regulation emerged at the United Nations General Assembly. Though nonbinding, the resolution noted the gaps between developed and undeveloped countries in the industry.
Additionally, it called for countries to bridge the gap.
Everything Else
Steve Endacott/AI Steve
Across the pond in the United Kingdom, voters didn't (apparently) fancy AI Steve's candidacy. The AI parliamentary candidate came last in the recently concluded polls, winning 179 votes in his constituency.
Furthermore, the UK's Electoral Commission indicated before the polls that the AI candidate's developer, Steve Endacott, would have been the one to go to the House of Commons rather than his digital avatar.
Radboud University (Kingdom of the Netherlands)
Interestingly, mind-reading AI systems are closer than you think. Research teams worldwide, including one from Radboud University in the Netherlands, have conducted experiments with surprising results.
The team deployed a functional MRI (fMRI) scanner to record brain scans and compare images and regions to pay attention to. Reconstructed images by AI tools showed (similar) results accurately.
The United Kingdom/Acusensu
Privacy issues in the UK have emerged with plans to install AI-powered cameras to spy on moving cars. The UK's Department for Transport indicated that 400,000 drivers still (use) mobile devices while driving. Additionally, Australian driving behavior-focused tech firm Acusensu developed the tech behind the cameras.
Following the Money
Magic
AI code-writing startup Magic is (allegedly) in talks to raise over $200 million. According to a July 2 Reuters report, several investors, including Jane Street, will (expectedly) put their monies down in the deal. Consequently, if successful, Magic will have a $1.5 billion value.
Cartken
Munich-based automated delivery startup Cartken raised $10 million in a funding round led by 468 Capital. Other investors include Shell Ventures, Magna International, Mitsubishi Electric, and Volex.
Altrove
On the French side, rare earth alternative startup Altrove raised €3.7 million (approximately $4 million) in a pre-seed funding round. Contrarian Ventures led the round, including HuggingFace CTO Julien Chaumond and others.
