OpenAI
According to a May 9 Reuters report, OpenAI will unveil its search engine next Monday.
Though the date for the revelation could change, OpenAI has (reportedly) been working on a search engine with Perplexity. Additionally, the Google I/O conference starts on May 14.
TikTok
To combat misinformation, video platform TikTok revealed plans to flag AI-generated content from several sources. Also, testing of the new label has started, and a roll-out will (soon) happen.
Capitol Hill
The conversation in Washington continued with the presentation of a bill to prevent bad actors from accessing AI technologies.
Reps. Michael McCaul (R-TX) and John Molenaar (R-MI) sponsored the bill alongside Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthitheir (D-IL) and Susan Wild (D-PA).
The bill will (also) give the Department of Commerce arbitrary powers to prevent Americans from working with foreign nationals to develop AI technologies that are against America's national security interests.
Industry Dive
Perplexity AI/SoundHound AI
SoundHound and Perplexity partnered to bring voice to all kinds of devices. The collaboration integrates Perplexity's Large Language Model (LLM) with SoundHound's Chat AI.
In contrast to static LLMS, the integration extends to real-time web-based answers.
Google DeepMind
The medical frontiers got stretched (again) with Google DeepMind's revelation of an AI model for living cells.
AlphaFold 3 offers in-depth insights into cellular functions and forecasts reactions to different conditions.
DeepMind developed AlphaFold3 in collaboration with Isomorphic Labs. Additionally, the model is the third iteration from 2018.
X Corp.
Elon Musk-owned X revealed new AI features for advertisers. AI Audience will allow advertisers to describe target audiences for each ad, while the platform will generate "relevant" users almost instantly.
Furthermore, the user-generated lists will (reportedly) have statistics per demographic.
Everything Else
Fei Fei Li/Bloomberg
AI's godmother thinks the doom-and-gloom prophecies about the technologies' emergence are overhyped (at best).
On May 9 at the Bloomberg Technology Summit, Li said that she thinks human extinction fears are "blown out of control."
The State of California
According to a May 10 Associated Press report, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on May 9 that his administration will collaborate with five firms to develop and test AI to improve public services in the state.
Furthermore, four departments will (initially) test the AI tools: the Health and Human Services Department, the Department of Tax and Fee Administration, the California Department of Transportation, and the Department of Public Health.
The State of Colorado
We move (over) to the home of the Rocky Mountains, where Colorado Legislators passed a bill that gives the Attorney General the powers to prosecute firms that use AI in customer discrimination.
Senate Bill 24-205 also requires companies in the state to disclose potential risks of "algorithmic discrimination" within 90 days of receiving a "credible report".
Following the Money
Microsoft
On May 8, Software giant Microsoft announced a $3.8 billion investment in Southeast Wisconsin. Microsoft aims to convert the region into an AI and cloud computing powerhouse.
The move will also enable the creation of America's first AI co-innovation lab and train 100,000 residents in AI skills.
Mistral AI
We move (over) across the pond to Paris, where Mistral is (reportedly) coming close to raising $600 million.
According to a May 9 Wall Street Journal report, the OpenAI competitor is seeking funds from Lightspeed Venture Partners and General Catalyst, who are (currently) investors in the firm.
Also, should the talks succeed, Mistral will have a $6 billion valuation.
xAI
Stateside, the Elon Musk-backed xAI will (reportedly) reach an $18 billion valuation after seeking a funding round.
According to a May 9 Bloomberg report, participants (could) include VC behemoth Sequoia Capital and others. There are no other details about the round.
