Under the AI Hood
Google/DeepMind
AI-generated code within Google's ecosystem is (now) at new highs. During the search engine giant's Q3 conference call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that AI platforms generate about 25% of its code.
Pichai also iterated that engineers review the AI-generated code. Similarly, Google will (reportedly) add AI-generated responses to its Android phone app within Pixel.
DeepMind's Big Sleep LLM also discovered a previously unknown zero-day vulnerability in SQLite's engine. The detection is a world first.
Anthropic/Palantir/Amazon Web Services (AWS)
According to a November 7 press release, Anthropic teamed up with Palantir to enable defense and intelligence access to the Claude chatbot suite within the AWS environment. The collaboration also integrates Palantir's platform with Anthropic's portfolio.
In addition, the deployment gives the security apparatus an operational focus.
Meta
Social media giant Meta revealed national security ecosystem access to its Llama models. In a November 4 post, Meta's President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, announced the measure.
Meta is also working with other tech giants to provide government access to AI solutions. The firms include Palantir, IBM, Scale AI, Anduril, AWS, Booze Allen, Lockheed Martin and others.
Industry Dive
The United Kingdom Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology
Across the pond in the United Kingdom, the government pushed business support further with the launch of an AI solution. According to a November 6 post, the UK government unveiled an AI assurance platform that provides information to local businesses about everything AI-related.
Furthermore, the government (also) released a tool that helps small businesses assess and deploy responsible AI practices.
Microsoft
Software giant Microsoft's AI efforts affected its Windows 11 operating system. New upgrades include generative fill and erase tools for its Paint app and rewrite and modification capabilities for Notepad.
Additionally, Notepad's rewrite capabilities are (currently) available in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany and Italy.
Fortinet, Inc.
Sunnyvale, California-based cybersecurity firm Fortinet revealed two new deployments powered by its FortiAI AI assistant. FortiAI for FortiNDR Cloud improves threat detection and examines vulnerabilities within cloud-based ecosystems.
FortiAI for Lacework FortiCNAPP is a collaboration tool within Network Operations Centers (NOCs) that improves the coordination of teams and their activities.
Both tools are natural language-based.
Everything Else
Duolingo
During Duolingo's Q3 earnings call, GenAI chatbot "Lily" stood in for CEO and co-founder Luis von Ahn to summarize results in a seven-minute video. The stunt introduced "Video Call with Lily," a solution that enables users to have natural conversations in new languages they are learning on the platform.
Furthermore, users can improve their skills by practicing conversations with "Oscar," an AI chatbot.
Microsoft/Avanade
Thanks to Avanade's Intelligent Garden (powered by Microsoft), green-fingered people will soon have to collaborate with an AI-powered system. Powered by sensors and a chat-based interface, Intelligent Garden provides real-time information and enables everyday decisions on plant care.
Veen Bosch & Keuning (VBK)
Utrecht, Netherlands-based publisher Veen Bosch & Keuning revealed plans to translate some of the nonfiction books in its commercial portfolio to English. Here's the catch: the experiment is AI-powered.
Additionally, VBK limited the project to less than ten books and will remain on a limited basis. The project also has human components from start to finish.
Following the Money
Perplexity AI
Search engine-focused Perplexity AI is reportedly finalizing its $500 million fundraising efforts. Institutional Venture Partners is allegedly leading the charge.
Once completed, Perplexity AI will have a valuation of $9 billion.
Coatue Management
Tech-focused Coatue is seeking $1 billion to invest in AI startups. According to a November 4 Bloomberg report, most (of the) funds will come from institutional investors. However, smaller sums will come from HNIs via setups with Raymond James and Associates and (other) similar firms.
Emergent
Similarly, London, United Kingdom-based VC Emergent secured £56 million for its other fund. The new second fund will focus on AI-powered learning and work solutions startups.
Emergent also aims to invest in between 25 and 27 startups.
