The grind is (apparently) real in the industry. Earnings were in focus, with an increasing share of profits coming from AI.
The government is also having a keen interest in how things work out.
That said, there are still good and bad AI use cases. Legislation and law enforcement are catching up with the times.
The headlines:
Apple added four small iterations of its OpenELM;
Google reversed course and enabled legacy access (somewhat) for Android 10 and 11 users;
Everyone in Afton, Iowa, can sleep well with a new AI gun detection solution for school kids;
Can AI (really) detect the age of human brains? (read on to find out);
Plus, the numbers games provide critical insights into what will come next (more on that later);

Under the AI Hood
Apple
According to an April 24 The Verge report, Apple's researchers introduced Open-source Efficient Language Models (OpenELM), four models within the Hugging Face model library ecosystem. The models are text-related.
Also, the iPhone maker has not (yet) said anything about unveiling LLMs.
Things are coming together for the Gemini chatbot with an announcement from Google that the AI LLM is (now) available on Android 10 and 11 devices. The move enables legacy access for users who want to take advantage (of) the product update.
Oracle/NVIDIA AI
Tech giant Oracle introduced new AI features to its Oracle Fusion Cloud Customer Experience (CX), improving sales via vertical integrations.
The new AI capabilities include GenAI automated answers, deal and opportunity identification, content creation, seller engagement, and more.
In related news, Oracle announced the availability of the NVIDIA AI Enterprise within the Oracle U.S. Government Cloud ecosystem.
Industry Dive

Parents, teachers, and everyone else can (now) breathe easy in the 500-strong School district in Afton, Iowa.
Sanctuary AI
Across the border in Maple Country, Sanctuary AI revealed the seventeenth generation of Phoenix™, its general-purpose humanlike robot.
Powered by the Carbon™ AI control system, upgrades to Phoenix™ include increased uptime, build, and assembly periods alongside smaller hydraulics with a less than one-day learning period for new tasks.
The Estée Lauder Companies/Microsoft/Ferrovial/DXC Technology
Microsoft was in the thick of things with partnerships with the Estée Lauder Companies to develop an AI Innovation Lab that leverages the Azure OpenAI Service.
Also, the collaboration will improve the standing of ELC brands across the board.
In related news, global infrastructure behemoth Ferrovial teamed up with DXC Technology to develop Quercus. Quercus will aid the adoption and deployment of GenAI solutions within the Ferrovial ecosystem.
Furthermore, the collaboration runs on a Microsoft tech base.
Everything Else
Pikesville High School (Baltimore)
On an alarming note, police arrested a high school Principal in Baltimore after (allegedly) creating a fake AI-generated voice note that (reportedly) contained racial slurs against Jews and Black people.
Also, authorities relieved Eric Eisworth of his position.
The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology
Beijing City seeks to lead the AI race per municipality by announcing subsidies for companies that buy locally produced AI chips.
An April 24 document introducing the plans did not mention the subsidy amounts. Beijing also plans to be a self-reliant AI city by 2027.
Drexel University
Interestingly, researchers from Philly-based Drexel University developed an AI-based technique to determine a brain's age via electroencephalogram (EEG) scans.
The innovative method could be used in the early detection of neurological problems, saving lives in the process.
Following the Money
Meta
Things are (seemingly) shifting for social media giant Meta. Its current $200 billion loss in value follows CEO Mark Zuckerberg's assertion that AI solutions within the Meta ecosystem could take years to (turn a) profit.
Before the revelation, Meta's financials showed higher operational (AI-related) costs and slimmer revenue margins because of investments in the sector.
Microsoft
In contrast, Microsoft's AI bets paid off big time, with results beating expectations (revenues are at $61.86 billion). The consequence follows a $10 billion investment in the sector in the past few months.
In related news, on April 25, Google CEO Sundar Pichai indicated that the search engine giant will monetize its AI solutions through ads, cloud infrastructure, and subscriptions.
Google’s parent company Alphabet is betting (heavily) on AI, with Q1 '24 capital expenditure crossing $12 billion from $6.3 billion YoY.
Boston Consulting Group (BCG)
According to an April 23 Financial Times report, BCG chief Christoph Schweizer iterated that about a fifth of the behemoth's profits will come from AI.
Schweizer also expects that figure to double to 40% by 2026.
